More and more over the last several months I’ve come to realize (through experience) that you can’t build a business or even complete a project in your free time. Don’t get me wrong, there are projects we DO in our free time with no anticipation of finishing it in short order. Let’s not confuse that with a business goal, project or objective because there is certainly a difference.
When I started a business a few years ago my goals were wonderful and my ideas were attractive. Mentally I knew what I wanted but physically i was not prepared. Spending the time to work on my business, ideas and/or projects was nowhere NEAR what it should have been. Despite being in college at the time, I still had plenty of down time that was wasted away doing non-productive things…such as video games, movies, etc.. Looking back I realize my faults – we learn as we grow.
Now, I’m in a different state of mind. Yes, I’m trying to bite off more than I can chew. Yes, I want far more than I did back then. Yes, I’m doing things differently. What is certainly different is my drive, my passion and my understanding of what it really takes to find those successes.
My question to you is, how much relaxation time are you spending versus building your business? Do you watch an hour of TV every day? Why not cut that to 30 mins a day or 1 hour a day but only 4 days a week? How much time do you spend surfing the web, wandering around on Facebook or Twitter?
We have so many distractions it can be very tough to focus. Believe me, I know it’s hard but those sacrifices you make now will pay off much sooner down the road. Your competition will crush you before you’re even aware. It’s important for you to work hard, stay focused and on schedule.
You can’t build a business in your free time – that’s called a hobby.
I’d like to know, what works for you in terms of cutting out distractions, staying on schedule, focusing, etc.?
